Ever had someone say “maybe you could eat the bread in Italy” or “what if you just tried one bite?”… Comments like this can be infuriating! But my husband reminded me most people JUST don’t know!! And that’s okay! Why would they?
It’s human nature to assume things that are common knowledge to us (ahem, it’s an autoimmune disease not an allergy) would be common knowledge to most people. But I have to think back to before I was diagnosed. “Cross contact? Celiac safe? Dedicated fryer?” These would’ve been foreign terms to me then!!!
Most people mean well when they ask questions or make comments about being gluten free. So when someone says something like “could you eat the bread in Europe?” Take the opportunity to educate them! Smile and say I wish! But in many European countries such as Italy, celiac disease is actually extremely common! Someone who’s stomach is say sensitive to certain gluten items may be able to though.
And when you get the occasional jerk who isn’t willing to learn, just roll your eyes (maybe in your head) and move on. We can’t let it get to us!
So stay calm, share the knowledge, and move on ❤ we got this!
